dcterms:description """The Social Identity Model of Behavioural Associations (SIMBA)—a methodological and theoretical integration of both social identity and balanced identity theories—has previously identified associations among social identification (self-group), group norms (group-behaviour) and individual behaviour (self-behaviour). With a focus on the student identity and drinking behaviour, previous online and lab-based investigations of SIMBA have offered support for the balance-congruity principle—that the strength of any one link in a triad of associations can be predicted by the combined associative strength of the remaining two.
However, support for balance-congruity on both implicit and explicit measures has been inconsistent across the previous tests of the SIMBA that have focused on the behaviour of alcohol consumption; one study (i.e., Study 1 of this project) found support on both implicit and explicit measures, while another (i.e., Study 2 of this project) found support on only implicit measures (see: https://osf.io/aqygh/?view_only=4366da1f52314546a77f40de4db958d6).
Recently, research has established that support for balance-congruity is dependent on a scaling assumption—that numeric zero values for predictor variables should indicate zero strength of the associations they intend to measure (Cvencek et al., 2020). Results revealed a decline in support as a function of the magnitude of zero-point displacement. In light of this, the current study aims to replicate, and extend, our prior work by providing a direct test this zero-point assumption—and its relevance to self-group-behaviour triads (i.e., self-student-drinking triads). To do so, we compare support for balance-congruity on explicit measures of social identity, group norms, and individual behaviour that do (i.e., visual analogue scale difference-scores) and do not (i.e., traditional Likert-type scale items) possess rational zero-points."""^^rdf:string ;
