That design identifies associations from differences between race days but cannot determine how pollution relates to changes in performance within a race.
This study will use split times from the London Marathon to examine whether variation in air pollution exposure during the race is associated with within-runner changes in pace. The primary analysis uses a 10-km landmark. The first 10 km are used to characterise demonstrated early-race ability and to predict subsequent passage times. Pace outcomes and cumulative exposure histories are then evaluated from 10 km onwards.
