dcterms:description
In a naturalistic environment, children are typically exposed to a range of objects they are more or less familiar with. Such varying degree of object novelty impacts how parents interact with and talk about the object (Chen et al., 2021; Sun & Yoshida, 2022), as well as how children handle the object (Schatz et al., 2022). Yet, to our knowledge, no study has investigated whether – and potentially how – novel and familiar toys are gazed at and handled differently within the same play instance. Specifically, it is an open question as to whether children show a novelty or familiarity bias during play, i.e., whether children preferentially play with novel or familiar toys when both are within her reach. With regard to parental behaviour, parents could either take an (active) pedagogic role or a (passive) supporting role. The former behaviour may be observed in the presence of novel objects if parents decide to teach their children about these novel objects, whereas the latter will be observed if parents decide to allow their children to explore on their own. Understanding how object novelty influences the characteristics of parent-child interactions is important because high-quality parent-child interactions contributes to optimal learning instances (e.g., Custode & Tamis-Lemonda, 2020; Kuchirko et al., 2020; Yu & Smith, 2012; 2013). For instance, parent’s object manipulation and object labelling have been shown to boost sustained attention (McQuillan et al., 2020) and impact children’s vocabulary size (Peters & Yu, 2020). Against this background, the current study examines the quality of parent-child interaction, parental labelling and children’s object manipulation when they interact naturally with various novel and familiar objects. In addition, we examine how this quality of interaction influences children’s learning of object labels.
