dcterms:description
The structural validity of the short dark tetrad (SD4; Paulhus et al., 2021) has received recent empirical attention. For example, Crawford et al. (2025) observed that the SD4 which purportedly measures the Dark Tetrad (i.e., Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism and sadism) did not fit well to a 4-factor structure. Moreover, Crawford et al. (2025) found that a 5-factor structure fit the data of their study better. This 5-factor solution (referred to as the 'dark-five of the SD4') revealed 5 factors labelled as: coalition building, grandiose exhibitionism, psychopathy, indirect sadism, and violent voyeurism. The data for this study was collected from so-called Western countries (e.g., UK, USA). Therefore, given that the SD4 is used to research the dark tetrad personality traits, it would be beneficial to examine the structural validity of the SD4 to detect if a 5-factor solution replicates across data from several countries. This study aims to collect secondary data from a range of countries and test the 5 and 4 factor solution to determine which has superior fit for the SD4.
