The current global COVID-19 pandemic has unprecedented consequences for the global population with detrimental effects on many areas of life. The key protagonists (i.e., agents, stakeholders or players) in the pandemic play a crucial role in public’s pandemic-related decisions and behavior. Such key protagonists might be individuals, groups, organizations or social movements which are in some way relevant in the context of the pandemic. Both global (e.g., WHO, supra-national pharmaceutical collaborations) and national protagonists (e.g., professional experts, political decision makers, national healthcare organizations, influential individuals, social and protest movements) can influence public reactions to the pandemic, but most measures concerning the COVID-19 prevention and cure are decided and influenced by national protagonists. Nonetheless, little is known about (1) who is perceived as relevant protagonists in any national context, and (2) how they are perceived by individuals in a given social context. This knowledge is important to understand and predict public reactions to pandemic-related decisions, compliance with preventive and curative measures, and support for the protagonists fighting the pandemic. To address these open questions, we plan to conduct comparative international research applying the Stereotype Content Model framework (SCM; Fiske et al., 2002). The SCM defines Warmth (i.e., the perceived friendly or hostile intentions of others; Fiske et al., 2007) and Competence (i.e., the perceived ability of others to enact said intentions; Fiske et al., 2007) as fundamental and universal dimensions of social perception. The SCM has previously been applied to assess the social perception of individuals (e.g., Janda et al., 2019), societally relevant groups (e.g., Fiske et al., 2002), political parties and their representatives (e.g., Cornwell et al., 2015), and organizations (e.g., Kervyn et al., 2014) in a large number of different contexts (e.g., Durante et al., 2013, 2017). Thus, we argue that the SCM provides a well-established framework to assess the social perception of different protagonists in the COVID-19 pandemic in a global comparison. Moreover, the SCM and the Behavior from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes map (BIAS-map; Cuddy et al., 2007) propose that warmth and competence perceptions as cognitive representations influence emotional and behavioral reactions. Thus, we expect that the warmth and competence perceptions of protagonists in the COVID-19 pandemic are related to individual COVID-19 pandemic-related reactions, decisions, and behaviors, such as compliance with general COVID-19 prevention measures, perspectives on anti-COVID-19 vaccination, as well as supportive and opposing behaviors and behavioral intentions for the different global protagonists in the pandemic. In this project, we are conducting two cross-sectional online-survey studies in more than 40 countries. The aim of the first online-survey has been to identify relevant protagonists in the COVID-19 pandemic in each country. The goal of the second online-survey is to collect information on how residents in each country evaluate the previously identified protagonists in terms of warmth and competence. In addition to warmth and competence assessments, we will assess compliance with general COVID-19 prevention measures, and perspectives on anti-COVID-19 vaccination (i.e., intentions to receive or reception of an anti-COVID-19 vaccination). While most protagonists will be specific for each country, we will also assess the social perception and supportive as well as opposing behavioral intentions and behaviors towards three protagonists that are relevant in most national contexts (in the following called “global protagonists”) across all countries to allow for cross-country comparisons. These are (I) the head of state (or prime minister or president), (II) physicians, and (III) anti-vaccinationists (or conspiracy theorists or COVID-19 deniers). Due to the local circumstances, some countries will not collect data on all three global protagonists, but rather a subset.
