The objective of the Bachelor thesis at hand is to determine which type of data graphics is best for comparative analysis among discrete groups. For following research, two main issues were announced: Which graph is particularly suited for group comparison - bar graph or pie graph? Furthermore, to which extent do distinct graphs activate diverging schemes? For the purpose of analyzing the questions at hand, a subject group of 20 people was formed; the group consisted to 50% of females. Using a specific experimental software designed by Mrs Fang Zhao (Ph.D.), the work at hand examined the response time and error rate of the experimental subjects. In order to put the statistic analysis in execution, Excel by Microsoft was applied. For hypothesis calculation, the T-test and the Pearson-Correlation-Coefficient were used. As laid down in my hypothesis, experimental subjects extracted information significantly faster from bar graphs than they would from pie graphs. The error rate did not deliver verification, however error rates occurring with pie graphs were lower in rank than those occurring with bar graphs. Relating to the second hypothesis, response time for the condition „nonswitch“ was significantly lower than for the condition „switch“. Again, err or rate did not deliver a significant result. Nonetheless, „switch“offered lower error rates than „nonswitch“. Lastly, the final hypothesis did not determine a correlation between the best tested subjects and the specific value of subjective graphs expertise, unlike expected. Nevertheless, the work at hand has mostly confirmed the suppositions. For future research, a larger group of subjects is needed in order to attain significant results.
