Extensive repetition can turn instrumental actions into outcome-insensitive habits (S-R). The use of verbal if-then plans, also known as implementation intentions, can help translating intentions to actions (Gollwitzer &amp; Sheeran, 2006), possibly by creating \\u2018instant habits\\u2019 (Gollwitzer, 1999). This leads to benefits in terms of efficient goal attainment \\u2013 but does this come at the cost of decreased flexibility when goals change (Legrand, Bieleke, Gollwitzer, &amp; Mignon, 2017)? In this study, we investigate the hypothesis that the use of implementations intentions leads to inflexible, habitual responding. \\nA novel computerised instrumental learning task called the \\u2018Sneaky Skate Game\\u2019 was developed to investigate habit formation and expression in human participants during fMRI. The task consists of two phases. During an initial learning phase, participants learn to collect certain ice creams (outcomes) by pressing a response button upon seeing (eight) different ice cream vans (discriminative stimuli) to collect points. Participants will be trained using verbal implementation intentions for half of the stimuli and using goal intentions for the other half of the stimuli. During the subsequent test phase, some outcome values change (i.e. outcome revaluation).
