Counting proficiency provides a foundation for future mathematics achievement. Many parents and educators develop a child’s counting ability through the use of counting books, which are available in many forms. Counting books can be categorized as “tactile” or “non-tactile” based on whether or not palpable, often 3-dimensional features (such as buttons, pop-ups, textured patches, etc.) are present. Previous literature has shown that tactile counting books may be less effective at promoting conceptual understanding of counting because the tactile features distract from the book’s content (Tare et. al., 2010; Chiong & DeLoache, 2013; Shinskey, 2021). However, a more recent study within this lab suggests that counting book features may differentially benefit distinct demographics of students. In this study, we will examine two existing data sets to determine the impact of tactile book features on girls’ counting frequency and accuracy.
